Sharath had rallied from a two-game deficit to tie the match at three, but he was unable to maintain his cool in the decisive game.

Chiquin Wang of China defeated G Sathiyan earlier, losing 3-11, 3-11, 6-11, and 3-11.

The women’s doubles competition saw a mixed day for India as well.

Sutirtha Mukherjee and Ayhika Mukherjee defeated Thailand’s Jinnipa and Wanwisa by scores of 11-8, 11-7, and 11-4 to go to the quarterfinals.

However, fifth-seeded Miwa Harimoto and Miyuu Kihara from Japan defeated Sreeja Akula and Diya Chitale 11-3, 11-5, and 11-8.

Manika, who won the mixed doubles bronze medal at the Jakarta Asian Games, will take against Chinese world No. 3 Yidi Wang on Saturday.

She has already lost in the mixed and women’s team events, so this is her last opportunity to bring home a medal from these Games.

Izaac Quek Yong and Yew En Koen Pang were defeated by Manav Vikash Thakkar and Manush Utpalbhai Shah of India 3-2 (3-11, 11-9, 11-6, 5-11) in the men’s round of 16.
