On Wednesday, Kane Williamson was picked to start for New Zealand against Pakistan in their Twenty20 international home series after recovering from an injury.

The elite batsman Williamson was sidelined for nine months due to a knee injury, thus he missed last month’s ODI and T20 series against Bangladesh.

The 33-year-old was given a precautionary break from his white ball obligations last month, but he bounced back to participate in the 50-over World Cup and a two-Test series in Bangladesh.

Williamson’s gradual comeback will include a break in the third game of the Pakistan series, which begins on January 12 and lasts five matches.

The Black Caps will be led by all-rounder Mitchell Santner in that Dunedin encounter.

In addition to missing both white-ball series against Bangladesh, opening batsman Devon Conway is back, while fast bowlers Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson will play for the first time for their countries since suffering injuries during the World Cup.

Due to chronic injuries, all-rounder Rachin Ravindra, who scored 578 runs in a string of standout innings at the World Cup, was noticeably absent from the 15-man roster. Other pitchers Kyle Jamieson and Michael Bracewell were also not selected.

According to coach Gary Stead, Ravindra needed to take a nap.

“We want to look after Rachin’s wellbeing because he’s a young player who has immense value to New Zealand Cricket,” Stead said.

“It is just not sustainable for him to be the lone player or staff member who has been traveling nonstop for the last five months across five different nations.

“He will be considered again for the T20 series against Australia in February and is still very much a part of our thinking for the T20 World Cup in June.”

Regarding the players absent, NZC said that Jimmy Neesham and Trent Boult were unable to participate because of commitments to international T20 leagues, while Kyle Jamieson was not taken into consideration as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury. In addition, Michael Bracewell was not picked since he is still recovering from an achilles injury.
